Emmy Fashion Review

It was either black, white or navy on the red carpet last night.  Neutrals ruled, while bright colors took a backseat.  For the most part people played it safe.  Let's go through some of the dresses and discuss:

This is not an easy dress to pull off, but I think Anna Paquin wore it well.    It's from Alexander McQueen's Resort 2011 collection.  As you can see, model Alla Kostromicheva's height helps her with the drama of the dress.  But Anna Paquin looks good as well.  Her hair and makeup are just perfect. This was a risk worth taking, and definitely the highlight of the red carpet.

So are we all thinking this dress is really, REALLY short?  Kudos to Heidi Klum because after, what four kids?, she looks amazing.  She's wearing Marchesa.  I think statement earrings instead of a necklace would have worked better, and maybe softer hair.  But she was definitely a standout.

This is the best I have ever seen Kelly Osbourne look.  She is beautiful in her Tony Ward gown.  Whoever styled her for the Emmy should get their own award.  I like the top of the dress better than the bottom, but Kelly is just perfect here.

I am so glad Lea Michele didn't wear the jacket.  Didn't Jennifer Hudson and Andre Leon Talley make that mistake for the Oscars?  Lea MIchele is on trend for the night in her strapless navy Oscar de la Renta (Resort 2011) gown.  It's a lot of dress, and I think it works better on someone tall.  Model Anastasia Kuznetsova is 5'11", while Lea MIchele is 5'2".  It's not that Michele looks bad; she doesn't.  But she made a couple of mistakes that didn't do her any favors.  The chunky necklace is hiding her neck, which is cutting her in half.  Had she gone without it, her neck would have looked longer, giving her height.  Furthermore, if her hair was pulled back it would have also helped her out.

I'm not loving Christina Hendricks in Zac Posen's Resort 2011 dress.  I think it's the feathers that bother me; just a bit busy (they're also drawing the focus right to the bust).   Model Eugenia Mandzhieva looks like a ballerina in the dress, but on Hendricks it's not the case.

I'm not afraid to admit I like January Jones' Versace dress.  I know there's been much negative talk about this look, but I think it's great, hair and all.  The color--it's gorgeous on her!  And how nice to see such a vibrant hue amid a sea of neutrals.  This dress is fun and unexpected and I'm so glad January Jones took a risk.

You know how on Project Runway Michael Kors often says, "It was the right dress on the right girl"?  This was not the case.  Sofia Vergara in Carolina Herrera did not work.  The earrings, the hair, it's all too much.  You don't know where to look first.  This is definitely a 1980s Miss Universe moment.  Try to picture the dress with the hair pulled back and simple jewelry.  Better, right?   I hope next time Sofia Vergara goes for a much more subdued look.

Here's another one shoulder dress, this one by designer Zuhair Murad. (Fall 2010 Couture)  Nina Dobrev looks so good, but I think a younger hairdo would have served her better.

Rose Byrne in Gucci is just perfect.  I love this dress, and she really pulls it off.  The hardware is incredible, adding hardness and edge to an otherwise soft dress.  Rose Byrne is always one of the best dressed, and she did not disappoint at the Emmys.

Jennifer Carpenter chose a dress by designer Oday Shakar.  I love her in this.  It would have been perfect if her hair was off her bare shoulder.  But, wow, look at this gorgeous dress!  It's my favorite of the night.

Fall Trends

Okay, I guess it's too early for fur.  I don't know about you, but as soon as the Fall '10 shows were over I was ready for some of the new trends.  Kitten heels?  I pulled those out right away.  Thank you Michelle Obama.  Head to toe color?  I'm from New York where most of us already wear head to toe black, so that won't be much of a change.  I was very intrigued by the floor sweeping skirt and pant lengths.  I pulled out a pair of my longest pants and for the entire day my heel kept getting caught in the bottom of the pants.  I was lucky I didn't wind up in a cast, but my legs looked super long, so I'll probably do it again.  The long skirts I'm not as sure about.  It seems very Family Ties to me, but we'll see.

Some more trends...

Menswear.  Is this new?  No, but it's so good, I'm glad it's still around.  Gold.  Have you seen Balmain's gold pants or Dries Van Noten's simple gold dress?  Sooo good.  Maybe in a few months I'll be ready for fur.  Faux, of course.  The 50s?  Prada and Louis Vuitton did it best.  I can't wait to see how it trickles down to H&M.

Right now I'm on the lookout for others working the trends early.  I'll keep you posted.
